The contribution
What this work established
Aleru contributes to BugSigDB’s organization of published microbiome signatures through Bioconductor’s Outreachy program. Her project account describes curation of glucose-metabolism studies and contributions to R-based analysis. This work helps turn scattered findings into structured records that retain information about the study, condition and microbial pattern.
Why this matters to microbial metallomics
Comparing microbiome and metallomic signatures first requires knowing whether the microbial patterns are comparable at all. Curation provides that foundation: it makes differences in body site, population and study context visible, helping future metal-focused analyses avoid treating every reported association as the same biological signal.
The next scientific question
The next step is to connect curated signatures to measured exposures and microbial functions while keeping association, mechanistic interpretation and clinical validation explicitly separate.
Research background
Divine Aleru translates microbiome research into structured evidence and accessible scientific writing. Her work centers on the interpretation of microbial signatures, study design and disease context, helping readers compare findings across studies and understand what the evidence can support.
As Microbiome Research Coordinator at Microbiome Medicine (2025–2026), she developed and published more than 300 research pages across 15 disease areas, critically appraised clinical and microbiome studies, and wrote research reviews for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Through Bioconductor’s Outreachy program, she curated more than 100 peer-reviewed studies for BugSigDB, reviewed over 200 studies to improve curation accuracy, and contributed to R tools for analyzing and reporting microbial-signature data. She subsequently served as an Outreachy co-mentor. Her laboratory experience at the University of Chester includes mammalian cell culture and Human Tissue Act training.
